Visiting Machspace before joining
Most of the time Machspace is a members-only space. However, you can visit as a guest of a member, and you can visit on open days when Machspace is open to the public.
Step 1: Application form
You can apply for membership online here, or you can fill in a paper form at Machspace.
Step 2: Induction
You will need to email us to arrange your induction: hello@machspace.org with a few possible dates and times you are available. We can arrange inductions on any day, including weekends.
(If you don’t come to an induction within 6 months of applying then we will delete your data for GDPR and data security reasons, and you will need to reapply; we will email you to let you know that we are doing that.)
You should bring some photo ID to the induction. We’ll need to see it to verify your identity, but we won’t make a copy.
During your induction, the director/space manager will let you into the makerspace and go through the member guide and code of conduct with you. You will have to sign a copy of the code of conduct, to show that you’ve read and understood it and that you agree to follow it.
You’ll then be given a membership number and a key fob. You can use this key fob to access the makerspace at any time.
Induction usually takes around 1–1.5 hours.
Step 3: Payment
Similarly to most makerspaces, we operate on a monthly fee model for membership, with a sliding scale. You will need to make a monthly financial contribution to become a member, but you can choose any amount from £1 up.
Our guidelines are as follows:
- Unwaged/low wage: £1-£10 per month, pay as you feel
- Waged: £10 per month
- Supporter: £20 per month
You will not be asked to prove your income or lack thereof when choosing your tier, and you will be trusted to change your tier if your income situation changes.
New members are required to set up a standing order or direct debit at their induction in order to receive their workshop access key fob.
The membership pack you receive at your induction contains our bank details for setting up a standing order. Standing orders are preferable for us as we don’t need to pay a fee on your contribution. You can also set up a monthly direct debit here.
